Goals Beyond Grass calls out for votes to get a share of Tesco’s Stronger Starts fund

Goals Beyond Grass is bidding for a cash boost from the Tesco Stronger Starts scheme.

Stronger Starts provides grant awards of up to £1,500 to local community projects, with a particular focus on children and young people.

Three groups in every community have been shortlisted to receive grant awards and Tesco customers can vote for the group they think should take away the top award in their local Tesco store.

Goals Beyond Grass is one of the groups on the shortlist in Coleford, Lydney, and Cinderford.

Inclusive Cycling Sessions
Cannop
Enabling disabled people to cycle safely on a wide range of adapted bikes to suit any disability, every Wednesday throughout the year improving physical and mental wellbeing.

“Our sessions get people cycling along the family cycle trail using our adapted bikes. Seeing their smiles when they get back to the Cycle Centre reminds us why we do what we do, and we hope to count on your votes to help us deliver this vital project.” – Will Alonso – Goals Beyond Grass

Voting is open in all Tesco stores from October 2025 until mid-January 2026. Customers will cast their vote using a blue token given to them at the check-out each time they shop.

Tesco’s Stronger Starts – previously known as Tesco Bags of Help and Tesco Community Grants – has already provided over £123 million to more than 69,000 projects across Britain.

This £5m Stronger Starts grant programme, delivered in partnership with charity Groundwork, helps schools and children’s groups provide nutritious food and healthy activities that support young people’s physical health and mental wellbeing, such as breakfast clubs or snacks, and sports equipment for after school clubs.

Claire de Silva, Tesco UK Head of Communities and Local Media, said: “Helping schools and children’s groups access the food and resources they need is vitally important in getting children a stronger start in life. Children with enough food have more energy, better concentration, and ultimately achieve more too.”

Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s UK Chief Executive, said: “As a community charity, we have seen first-hand how schools and other groups supporting young people have been playing a much bigger role in ensuring children are getting a healthy start to the day and getting access to spaces and services to support physical activity and mental health. Family budgets are tight and school budgets are tight, but it’s so important that children stay fed, fit and focused, so we’re delighted to be able to prioritise these activities alongside Tesco with the Stronger Starts programme.”

Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities, particularly those helping to provide food and giving children the support they need for a good start in life.

Peter Kenneth Hancock Case Study

Empowering Inclusion through Powerchair Football: A Case Study of Peter-Kenneth’s Journey

This case study focuses on the transformative impact of powerchair football and multisports on Peter-Kenneth, a young powerchair football player, at Coney Hill Primary School. Through the collaboration with GBG, the school aimed to provide an inclusive sports experience for students of all abilities. This case study highlights the positive outcomes experienced by Peter-Kenneth and the broader school community.

Peter-Kenneth, a powerchair user, faced limitations in participating in mainstream sports due to physical constraints. However, his love for sports remained strong, and the introduction of powerchair football and multisports opened up a new avenue for him to engage in physical activities. This initiative aimed to foster inclusion, break down barriers, and create a shared experience among students.

Peter-Kenneth’s mother, Charlene Hancock, witnessed the profound impact of powerchair football on her son. By engaging in a sport he loved, Peter-Kenneth experienced a sense of empowerment and inclusion. He was able to showcase his abilities to his friends, who recognized his talent and enthusiasm. This validation from peers played a crucial role in boosting his self-confidence and fostering a sense of belonging.

The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) at Coney Hill Primary School observed the positive outcomes of the powerchair football initiative. ‘The staff conducted themselves professionally and created a fun and age-appropriate environment for all children. The inclusive activities helped to build cultural capital, reinforce equality and equity principles, and promote social integration among students. The success of the initiative was evident as two children with special educational needs continued their involvement in powerchair football training outside of school.’

Parents of students both with and without special educational needs expressed their appreciation for the school’s efforts to provide inclusive sports activities. The opportunity for their children to participate in powerchair football and multisports was seen as a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive community. The positive reactions from parents further emphasized the importance of promoting diverse sports experiences within the school environment.

Peter-Kenneth himself described the experience as “amazing,” highlighting the joy he felt in sharing his passion with his friends. Being able to demonstrate his skills and provide his peers with a glimpse into his world through powerchair football was an empowering experience. The positive response and participation from his friends further reinforced his belief in the inclusive nature of the sport.

This case study demonstrates the transformative impact of powerchair football on Peter-Kenneth’s life and the broader school community. The initiative promoted inclusivity, empowerment, and social integration, enabling Peter-Kenneth to overcome physical barriers and foster positive relationships with his peers. The involvement of GBG and the collaborative efforts of the school staff played a pivotal role in making this initiative a resounding success. By providing an opportunity for all students to engage in sports activities from diverse perspectives, the school reaffirmed its commitment to equality, equity, and inclusion.

Jack Hazel – Powerchair Football

Jack Hazel – Powerchair Football

When he was four, Jack Hazel was not involved in any physical education or extracurricular activities before he attended one of our school taster sessions. However, since discovering Powerchair football at the session, he has become fully committed, attending two regular weekly sessions and even taking part in a competitive fixture. Jack has met with GBG ambassador and former England Powerchair Football player, Coach Brad Bates, who has become a role model for him and others with similar conditions. Through participating in our sessions, Jack has found a new sense of purpose and enjoys the experience. With St James Place Funding, GBG was able to attend Jack’s school, allowing him to participate with his classmates and show them what he is capable of. The school has expressed interest in promoting our Accessible sports activities and clubs so that Jack Hazel’s peers can attend alongside him.

Jack Hazel’s headteacher expressed gratitude for Brian from Goals Beyond Grass for organizing the powerchair football event, which included football matches, penalty shootouts, races, and a space invaders game. The session was a novel experience for everyone, enabling children, parents, and staff to partake in an inclusive and social activity that required significant skill and dexterity to control the chairs.

Jack’s mother, Millie, recounted that he joined powerchair football when he was four but fully started participating after the pandemic ended. Powerchair football has since been a significant part of his life, providing a sense of belonging and ownership through attending training sessions and other events organized by GBG. Jack Hazel particularly enjoys the freedom and speed he experiences in a powerchair, which has helped him realize his potential and become proud of his achievements. Joining GBG has enabled Jack and his family to make friends and gain valuable support, inspiring him and developing his confidence and determination. Jack has even shown off his skills to his school, friends, and their parents, opening their eyes to the level of skill required in this sport. Millie is thrilled that Jack Hazel has found something that motivates him and keeps him going.

Golf Day 2023

Goals Beyond Grass Charity Golf Day

in Association with LAMEX Food Group

On the Day

The GBG Charity golf day in association with Lamex was held on Friday 21st April 2023 at Rodway Hill Golf Course, and was a huge success, raising £3388.40 for GBG.

This money will be used to maintain our regular community club sessions, as well as helping us to subsidize our outreach sessions at organisations such as schools and care homes.

The golf day was a 2 best ball stableford tournament, with the best 2 scores per hole taken for each team, then added up at the end. The top 4 were only separated by 2 points, with the winners on countback (pictured) scoring 92 points.

The winning team, consisting of Johnathan, Mark, Pete, and Adrian, were treated to a nice crate of beer and a 4-ball voucher to the Marriott Worseley Park. Second Place and Third Place were awarded with a round of golf at Rodway Hill Golf Club, and a crate of beer respectively, which they were all very happy about.

The raffle which was held on the day was also very successful, allowing some of the golfers to walk away with prizes of up to £280.

Pro Insurance Charity Walk

Pro Insurance Charity Walk for GBG

We were lucky enough to have 20 Pro Insurance staff members embark on a Charity Walk to raise money for GBG on Wednesday 22 March 2023. They travelled from our Office at the GL3 Community Hub, to Blackbridge Athletics Track, home of our GBG Bikes sessions on Mondays, then over to Gloucester City AFC, home of our GBG Gloucester City AFC PAN Football Teams.

The guys were greeted with Bacon Rolls and Coffee at our office, and were able to observe, and help out a bit, our Active Ageing Sessions with Oakley. They then left the Community Hub, walking for 2 hours down to Blackbridge Athletics Track, where they were able to use some of our Adapted Bikes, and attempt a couple of shots in a Powerchair Football Strike Force. After this initial 5 mile walk, they headed over to Gloucester City AFC, where they were lucky enough to see a local derby in action (Gloucester U19s vs Kidderminster U19).

At each location, they were greeted by participants of each session, and the Pro Insurance team were very interested in what they do, why they participate, and how the money which they have raised could help.

The 7 mile walk for all 20 participants was completed within 5 hours, with over 20,000 steps each, meaning roughly 400,000 steps were taken overall.

GBG Warm Packs

The GBG Warm Packs

Helpers

As winter approached, the country was facing a Cost of Living Crisis. Many vulnerable people were struggling to make ends meet and keep themselves warm. In response, Goals Beyond Grass came up with an idea to help those in need. They decided to distribute warm packs to vulnerable individuals and families throughout the community, thanks to funding from the National Grid Community Matters Fund.

The warm packs included items such as Gloves, Hats, Insulated Socks, Packet Soups, Pot Noodles, A Themometer, A Hot Water Bottle, and a Torch to help in case of a blackout.

Bromford Housing received 20 of these warm packs, which they handed out to the people who needed them the most, living within their supported living network.

The Churchdown Warm Hubs received 21 of these warm packs, which meant that people who were known to be struggling for food and warmth could get these warm packs which meant so much to them all.

And the Food Banks received 19 of these warm packs. This included 10 going to the Brockworth Food Bank, and 9 going to the Churchdown Food Bank. These were handed out to people who had regularly been collecting food from these food banks, as they were known to the volunteers as people in need.

GBG and the others that helped to hand these 60 Warm Packs out were greeted with immense gratitude from all that received these warm packs, as they understood how invaluable things such as a Hot Water Bottle were for them, in this incredibly challenging time.
